Skilled visas & WA state nomination

Points-tested pathways to PR.189 · 190 · 491

Skilled visas are a competitive, points-tested path to living and working in Australia. The right occupation, a sound skills assessment and an accurate points claim make the difference between waiting indefinitely and receiving an invitation.

We advise on the Skilled Independent (189), Skilled Nominated (190) and Skilled Work Regional (491) visas, Western Australia's State Nominated Migration Program, and the path from a 491 to permanent residence.

Good to know

65 points is only the minimum
You need at least 65 points to lodge an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect, but meeting the minimum doesn't guarantee an invitation. Competitive occupations often need considerably more.
WA state nomination
Western Australia nominates skilled workers for 190 and 491 visas through its State Nominated Migration Program, using its own occupation lists and criteria. Settings change each program year, so check them before you plan around them.
Perth and regional visas
Perth currently counts as a designated regional area for the 491 and 494 visas, which opens up regional pathways for people living and working in Perth. Regional settings can change, so check before relying on it.
Skills assessment first
Most skilled visas need a positive skills assessment from the assessing authority for your occupation. Get it right before you lodge an Expression of Interest.

Questions

How many points do I need for a skilled visa?

At least 65 to lodge an Expression of Interest. In practice, many occupations need more to receive an invitation, especially for the 189.

How does WA state nomination work?

You lodge an Expression of Interest, then Western Australia invites candidates who meet its criteria for its occupation lists in regular rounds. If nominated, you apply for the 190 or 491 visa and commit to living and working in WA.

Does a 491 visa lead to permanent residence?

It can. After holding a 491 for at least three years and meeting the income requirements while living and working in a designated regional area, you may be eligible for the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191).

Can you help if I'm overseas?

Yes. Many skilled visa applicants apply from outside Australia, and we advise clients overseas by video.
